Pointed, deep green, pleated 2-3 inches wide and 1-3 feet long leaves, that resemble young palm fronds, forming a dense, upright, arching clump that can reach 3-6 feet tall and as wide. The foliage is evergreen in mild climates but is damaged below freezing, some mature clumps have survived temperatures down to 15F.
Plants prefers moist, fertile soil in full sun or light shade, but is very adaptable to many soils and growing conditions and is drought tolerant once established. Propagation by seed or divisions. Can become a pest in warm mild areas.
