Alii Manawahi is the Tiki, who watches over and protects the Hobbs Palmetum. The work was one of Grant Stephenson's early attempts at carving Tikis from Sabal palm trunks. It arrived at the garden by way of Mark Cortner's garden where it stayed only momentarily as his wife was not as convinced of the beauty, healing and protective powers of tikis in tropical
gardens. A most fitting addition to the Hobbs palmetum in 1995- its addition exemplifies the garden itself- a work in progress, with interesting details added over time, as the gardeners become more aware of the capabilities and possibilities for the space.
