In 1985,Cynthia Ford and Horace O. Hobbs, Jr. moved to
Garden Villas in near-south Houston and began planting. They
introduced Sabal, Trachycarpus and Washingtonia transplanted from their previous residence. This residence was a rental house located near Horace's grandfather's nursery where the Palmetum traces its heritage. The history of the Palmetum actually began in the greenhouses of Horace's grandfather, Horace Hilburn Hobbs in the early 1970's. Horace, Jr. traveled with his grandfather to Mexico during summers and Christmas vacations to collect palm seeds for introduction into horticulture in the elder Horace's Houston palm and tropical plant nursery just north of Sims bayou in Houston. Horace Jr. began growing different varieties and joined the International Palm Society Seed Bank for access to seed from around the world. The nursery no longer exists but the spirit of exploration and cultivation remains an integral part of the palmetum today. The grounds are essentially fully planted but are continually reworked to include additional species of frost tolerant palms and cycads, Texas native perennials, and a variety of tropical and sub-tropical plants. |
