Radermachera sinica; "China Doll" showing the leaves and trunk. This tree was planted in the summer of 1997 from a small 4 inch pot. At the time of planting, I had no idea as to how big it would get. Everyone I talked to, said, that it would only grow a few feet and most likely die the first winter! Here, it is spring 2001 and it is about 20 feet tall, with as many as six trunks and although this is a plant for zone 10 or better, it has survived 4 winters with the lowest temperature being 27°F. I might add that it seems to tolerate frost and our searing hot summers, though it likes lots of water and fertilizer during the growing season.
