Radermachera sinica China Doll, with terminal cluster of flowers, that are even more fragrant than the Brugmansia. Although you can't see the clustering flowers from the ground, their very sweet scent, profusely fills the garden, making known to all whom enter, of their presents. This tree was planted in the summer of 1997 from a small 4 inch pot. At the time of planting, I had no idea as to how big it would get. Everyone I talked to, said, that it would only grow a few feet and most likely die the first winter! Now, it is May 25, 2001 and it has grown about 20+ feet, with as many as eight trunks and although this is a plant for zone 10 or better, it has survived 4 winters, with the lowest temperature being 27°F while sustaining very little damage. I might add that it seems to tolerate frost and our searing hot summers, though it likes lots of water and fertilizer during the growing season. Image taken on May 25, 2001
